This is one of the first dramas that I have watched, that explores adult or sensitive topics in Asian culture.
I was clueless about starting a new K-drama because I started watching “When the Phone Rings”, but unfortunately it took a long 2-week leap. Huh, hurts, right?
I explored my Netflix List and found none of them interesting for my current mood. But then, I remember that I was eyeing this new series about four women in bright, tangy clothes in the poster on Netflix quite a few times…
So I started watching “A Virtuous Business”.
It is based on “Brief Encounters — a UK-based comedy series”.
Virtuous Business focuses on the lives of four women and the people around them, in a country setting, in the 90s.
![Four women in various dresses pose indoors: one in floral, one in leopard print, one in blue with short hair, and one in a red dress.](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/b0c027_42df693d1d534d7885c18b5b9924ac36~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_640,h_427,al_c,q_85,enc_auto/b0c027_42df693d1d534d7885c18b5b9924ac36~mv2.png)
These four women have different situations, needs, and expectations in their lives. They are not ‘city girls’ but have a mindset of forward ladies in the 90s.
To look for independence, identity, purpose and opportunity, these rural women started an online business but shhh it’s not a very popular business…
The business is to sell adult products — sex toys, lingerie, vibrators and more 😲
We are 21st-century women, and we feel free to speak up about this and discuss it with our friends. But just think of the situation in the 90s, most of the boomer generation were in their 20s–30s and there was/still is stigma around this topic, men were dominating, family did not support women — but boy these ladies had the guts to start an adult toy business.
I mean! It should be interesting to see how these women fight the stigma and clear their path of patriarchy to achieve success.
I wanted to write about the scenes and how they made me feel in this article, but suddenly I shifted it to a spoiler-free review blog because I don’t want to be a buzz killer to your excitement.
Because the series is that good!
What you’ll find in this K-drama is the minute details of the four women, which are portrayed differently as per their stories. Out of the four women, the topics of single motherhood, detachment from a partner, cheating in a relationship, and loving like a fool in your 50s have been explored.
If you’re a regular K-drama binge-watcher, you’ll be like, “Wait a minute, I KNOW them! I’ve seen that guy somewhere… and him too… Oh, and that guy!” And then you’ll start playing detective, Googling every face you’ve ever laid eyes on, just to figure out where you saw them before.
It’s like a mini treasure hunt, but with more “Hah, I knew it!” and less actual treasure :P
We have been there!
You will also learn about marketing tactics, survey reports, and promotional strategies used in the 90s to promote home-sale products. It is interesting to observe how they build a business from scratch.

A Virtuous Business explores womanhood, their needs, their focus on life, their need for independence, their need to become self-sufficient, and their success.
It’s thrilling. Because you will feel rollercoaster of emotions. You’ll be sitting there, chewing your nails to the bone, feeling every ounce of anxiety the main characters have as they take their first step to selling adult products.
It’s emotional. You will feel the sadness which comes from their failures because you know how hard work matters.
It’s comedy. The portrayal of customers and how they act seeing those products, and instances where the men start to act differently after seeing them selling door to door.
It’s loveable. I did not use the word ‘romantic’ but ‘loveable’ because the relationships involved even if intimate relationships are so adorable and innocent.
It has life lessons for women because you don’t know a guy unless they show you their true colors. And, you need to note down red-flag guy behaviors to ignore throughout this series, because they clear-cut shows them.
It will put you into difficult situations by thinking what if, in the future, this happens — to me — what will I do? You will relate to it and get curious about your life.
A virtuous business is a series that brings together and breaks families to show the truth of life that exists, goes on, and is felt by many.
I felt that the adult business was just a supporting element to the entire series, which in reality it shows for tangled and confused relationships.
What type of K-drama review would you like me to write next?
